Pieces of Eight Buried in South Carolina
During the last decade of the 17th century, pirates walked the streets of various Carolina coastal cities with gold pieces of eight (example shown here) bouncing from their pockets. Contrary to popular belief, though, much of the "treasure" was less gold and silver and more medicine, ammunition, and other trade-able items. Value was determined by the receiver, so if you needed cloth, you would do what was needed to acquire cloth.
