August 2010

8.3, 7, 10, 14. Plyler Park Events. Part of a summer event series along Ocean Boulevard in Myrtle Beach. Everything from music to carnival atmosphere to strolling bagpipes and more.

8.6-8. 28th Annual Craftsmen Summer Classic Arts and Crafts Festival. 10 AM to 6 PM at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center. Go online for a discount coupon at www.CraftShow.com. Huge show of talented artists and craftsmen. Great for a head-start on holiday shopping.

8.7. Art Party Art Walk. 10 AM to 5 PM. Painting and pottery demonstrations, live music, museum exhibits, farmers' market, and much more. A relaxing experience in the historic Southern town of Conway, SC. Details at 843-248-4527.

8.12 and 8.13. Children's Activity Day at Brookgreen Gardens. 10 AM to 2:30 PM. Children have the opportunity to received guidance in making various things and taking their creations home with them. The program is designed for ages 4-12, free with garden admission but must be accompanied by an adult. Come to Learning Lab I in Wall Lowcountry Center at Brookgreen Gardens. 8.19. Children's Museum of South Carolina Presents "Marshlife Exploration." 11 AM. Beth Thomas from Belle W. Baruch Center in Georgetown pays a visit to share fascinating insider information and stories about our important natural treasure, our marshlands. 8.30 to 9.03. Golf.com's World Amateur Handicap Championship. Sounding something like the US Open qualifying competition, this is 72 holes of intense stroke play competition, an 18-hole championship playoff, with nightly parties and entertainment. Registration at www.worldamgolf.com.

September 2010

Twentieth Anniversary of Pawleys Island Festival of Music and Art.  This series of events occurs throughout the fall in/around the Pawleys Island area.  Click on this link for more information about date, time, location, and tickets:  http://pawleysmusic.com/.

Now through October 31st.  Whispering Wings.  Brookgreen Gardens' Butterfly Exhibit.  Small fee charged for admission to this exhibit in addition to the admission fee for the Gardens.  The exhibit showcases dozens of species of butterflies native to our area and the southeast U.S.  It closes for the winter and reopens in the spring of 2011.

9.3-4.  Plyler Park Events.  The final bands as part of the summer event series.  September 3rd - The Lazy River Band (Rock).  September 4th - Parmalee (Modern Rock).

9.11.2010.  6th Annual Paws Across the Water Duck Race.  Held at Barefoot Landing in North Myrtle Beach benefiting the Humane Society, the duck race features thousands of rubber ducks placed in the Waterway to compete for prizes.  People are encouraged to buy their ducks, thereby supporting needy rescued animals of the NMB Human Society.  Entertainment, food, vendors.  Details at 843.272.8349.

9.12.2010.  Oktoberfest in Little River, SC.  Held from 9 AM to 6 PM, this festival celebrates German culture.  Enjoy great food, wonderful music and dancing, plus plenty of good cheer throughout the day!  Kids are free all day and are invited to visit the children's booth.  Details at 843.249.6604.

9.17.  Fall Festival of SASA Shriners 2010 at the Old Myrtle Square Mall.  7:30 AM to 6 PM.  Family fun with food, entertainment, and Shriner events (motorcycle and go-cart competitions, hillbilly car and rag-top car shows, vendors, and more.  Details at 843-997-8611 or  www.sasafestival2010.com.

9.17-26.2010.  SOS Fall Migration for Shag Dance Clubs.  Billed as the last big party for shag dance enthusiasts before winter sets in, this event is a big street party with side events in the local clubs along Main Street in North Myrtle Beach.  Not a club member?  Come on along and meet some new friends.  For details see http://www.shagdance.com/calendar.htm. 

9.23-26.2010.  19th Annual St. John's Greek Festival.  Held in Myrtle Beach at the St. John the Baptist Greek Orthodox Church, this festival is placed on many calendars a year in advance.  Its food, fun, and festivities are legendary with emphasis on learning about Greek culture and having fun, plus raising money for the church.  Details at 843.448.3773.

9.24-26.2010.  35th Annual Atalaya Arts and Crafts Festival.  Huntington Beach State Park near Murrells Inlet.  Free admission to park during the festival; $6 admission to Atalaya (15 and under free).  100 artisans, food, music, and much more.  Details at 843.237.4440.  (Note:  due to the historic nature of the setting, stroller and wheel chairs can be difficult to navigate on the uneven surfaces and stairs, plus crowds, narrow hallways.)

9.29 – 10.3.  Myrtle Beach Fall Bike Rally.  Various Myrtle Beach and North Myrtle Beach locations will participate with vendors, parties, and events for bikers.  More details at www.MyrtleBeachBikeWeek.com.

9.30 – 10.2.  U. S. Open King Mackerel Fishing Tournament.  This is North Carolina's premier fishing tournament with over $100,000 in cash prizes.  Drive to historic Southport, NC, for the activities associated with this event.  Details at 800.457.6964.
