FAMILY VACATION NEWSLETTER

Now that Easter has come and gone, we along the Grand Strand are seeing more and more signs that the growing season is upon us - not only on the landscape but also the re-energizing of people and the economy. Of course, the most noticeable sign of spring 2009 life has been the landscape -green grass, colorful daffodils and azaleas, and the sounds of song birds. Tree leaves are also following suit, turning from their newly budded stage of light green to deepening shades of forest.

While our over-wintering guests pack and leave to return to their northern homes, they express hopes of returning here to enjoy our summer beach. Meanwhile, school groups and families and weddings, anxious for the carefree days of vacation, plan their stays here enthusiastically.

Avista Resort's staff works hard so that you can relax and enjoy your stay from the moment that you arrive here. Property-wide improvements over the first quarter of the year have included cleaning and repairing where needed in the condo rooms and common areas, tightening pool security, designing variations in the menu for Just Off Main, adding a pool table in Tree Top Lounge, and many other upgrades.

On April 24th, the Avista Relay for Life team, in support of cancer awareness, made its Relay appearance at the Ripken Experience for a non-stop walk-a-thon to raise money and have a great time as well. More about this worthwhile effort appears below.

Of course, one of the very first signs of spring is the arrival of the Society of Stranders here for ten days of dancing fun. We wish you a happy spring and an even happier summer! If you have a chance to make room for us on your calendar, come on down and see just how a beach vacation is possible. Because 2009 has become the year of the discount, taking a vacation this year is practically cheaper than staying home! Keep up-to-date by checking with us or our web site at www.AvistaResort.com.

Your Friends at Avista Resort!

Sounds of Spring at Avista Resort

On Saturday, April 25th, www.beachmusic45.com presented an SOS event at Avista Resort called "Sounds of Spring," hosted by Craig Fleming and Neal "Soul Dog" Furr. SOS'ers who came here from all across the country to enjoy "SOS Spring Safari" sat around the pool listening to an afternoon of live bands showcasing beach music. Some even "grooved" on out to the shoreline for even better dancing. This event occurred only at Avista and kept the SOS beat going all afternoon, noon to 7 pm, with tunes from the Royal Scotsman Band, The Out-of-Towners Band, the Big Time Party Band, and The Fabulous Hot Dog Daddy-O's, plus many special guest artists. SOS'ers got up and danced around the pool, danced in the tubes around the lazy river, and danced in the grassy areas near the beach boardwalk.

Did you have a chance to get into the mood of beach music during SOS week, to sit leisurely by Avista's pool sipping one of the resort's frozen concoctions while you wiled away the afternoon in the sunshine? We hope so.

Around Town

From the point at which March went out "like a lion," we at Avista have enjoyed watching the gradual transformation of the landscape from winter's somber tones to the grandeur that is spring. Yes, we have experienced occasional showers, much needed to produce our colorful flowers, sea oats, and tree leaves that we enjoy seeing over the summer.

Unquestionably, the most noteworthy sign of spring is the celebration of , and nothing says spring at the beach as much as our amazing views of the ocean, gently warming weather, and brightly colored blossoms. Just on cue, all of this came together for a fabulous Easter weekend!

The chef and his staff outdid themselves with a delicious array of tastes - traditional dishes such as Eggs Benedict, shrimp and grits, Southern-style biscuits and gravy, and country ham, to name only a few items. Of course, the time-honored baked ham and many side dishes also appeared.

Children of all ages not only enjoyed Avista's Easter events during the weekend, also the diverse options around the North Myrtle Beach area such as McLean Park's Easter egg hunt and Barefoot Landing's magic show and soap-bubble blast. With so many things to see and do around here, and only one weekend, it was a wonder that any time at all remained for relaxing, but by the number of people out there on the beach, many people found the time.

Now that spring is sliding on by us, think about your own summer plans. If your vacation itinerary remains elusive, this particular year teams with discount opportunities. Check with the Avista web site to see our specials for a money-saving beach vacation. We can help make your summer vacation happen! So, even though the Easter bunny has left the building, let the magic of summer come your way.

Volunteers for Relay for Life as Featured Employees of Avista

With more than 4,900 relays occurring at organizations throughout the country and across 19 nations, Relay for Life is making a global impact this year in the fight against cancer. One word sums up why - teamwork. Across the globe, millions of people have made a difference. Here at Avista, the power of collaboration is evident, too. The joint efforts of our staff volunteers have been instrumental in raising money through bake sales, car washes, a raffle for a hand-made quilt, book sales, Easter pictures with E. Bunny, an Easter coloring competition, monies raised through "dress-down" Fridays, a chicken "bog" lunch sale, plus collecting donations.

Some of the lead energizers here at Avista include Marvis Livingston, Ashley Santana, and everyone who works at the Front Desk position. Together they have enthusiastically promoted the Relay cause at the busiest section of the resort.

The Reservations staff has also been on the forefront of efforts on behalf of Relay over the past several months. From that group, Nikki Allman has been instrumental in coordinating the team's creative efforts, keeping the momentum rolling. We congratulate each of these ladies and the entire Avista team for the above-work-hours efforts, enthusiastic spirits, and tireless energies on behalf of this worthy cause.

On April 24th Avista's Relay volunteers went to the The Ripken Experience for a non-stop walk to raise funds for cancer awareness. We hope, if you were in town, that you were able to join us to support the team. In August, the team puts its energies into a Relay for Life golf tournament; see our next month's article about Relay for Life.

Well done, team!

Military Appreciation Days

Avista Resort looks forward to service families joining us for Military Appreciation Days, May 28-30, 2009. Though the event itself is held in Myrtle Beach, the entire Grand Strand is celebrating all active and retired military from all branches of the service with promotions, discounts, and festive activities.

Featured Recipe - Coca-Cola 7-Bone Roast

Preparation time for this recipe is 30 minutes, and cooking time is 2 hours. You will not taste Coca-Cola in the final dish, but the gravy is exquisite. The yield is 6-8 servings.

INGREDIENTS:

  • 1 (3 to 4 pounds) beef 7-bone roast
  • Kosher salt and pepper
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 pound baby red (creamer) potatoes, scrubbed, skins on
  • 8 ounces button mushrooms, cleaned
  • 1/2 pound peeled baby carrots
  • 1 onion, very thinly sliced
  • 1 cup Coca-Cola or other cola (not diet) at room temperature
  • 1 cup tomato sauce (canned or homemade)
  • 1 packet dry onion soup mix
  • 1 tbsp sweet Hungarian paprika
  • 2 tsp dried oregano, crushed
  • 1 tsp garlic powder

DIRECTIONS:

  • Line a 9x13-inch baking pan with foil.
  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
  • Sprinkle roast liberally with salt and pepper. Heat a heavy-duty skillet until very hot, adding olive oil, to quickly sear the 7-bone roast on both sides.
  • Place seared roast in baking pan. Surround with potatoes, mushrooms, and carrots in an even layer. Spread sliced onions evenly over the top of the meat and vegetables.
  • Mix cola, tomato sauce, onion soup mix, paprika, oregano, and garlic powder in a bowl until combined. Pour the mixture evenly over meat and vegetables. Cover tightly with foil.
  • Bake for 2 hours.
  • Remove from oven and let rest at least 15 minutes. Carve meat. Serve with vegetables and pan gravy.
  • Note: This method also works well in a large oval slow-cooker, low setting for 6 to 8 hours. Alternatively, omit the vegetables (except the sliced onions), and cook the 7-bone roast alone as a main dish.

GUEST COMMENTS

Quite often guests tell us how much they enjoy their vacations at Avista Resort, but comments that describe great customer service really make our day! Here are some describing more-than-pleasant experiences:

My wife and I arrived on March 17th, tired from our trip. The young lady who checked us in (I don't remember her name, but she was by herself at about 4:00) was very pleasant and helpful. Angela came in about that time bubbling with cheerfulness. Later, we stopped to get information on local restaurants, and Angela was extremely knowledgeable and helpful again. This afternoon, she went out of her way with recommendations. All your staff with whom we have come in contact have been professional and courteous, but please extend a special thank you from the Knacks of Charlotte to Angela. Her name says it all! She has been an "angel" for us and is a real jewel for your organization.

All the rooms in our 4 bedroom condo were AMAZING!!! We felt right at home, in a very, very, very, clean "house." Our view from the 14th [floor] was above and beyond BEAUTIFUL!!!! Also--our father-in-law was staying in a room on the first floor, and he was recovering from open heart surgery--we all loved your work out room---especially our father-in-law.

Avista Resort Stays GREEN!

Besides saving energy and water by providing guests with the option of reusing their towels beyond day "one," Avista Resort makes use of a wide number of "green" options in its daily operations. Here are just a few:

  • Where possible, we buy certified SC fresh produce.

  • When replacement televisions are called for, we advise owners to use "energy-saver" products - LCD, flat-screen computer monitors, etc..

  • As soon as the weather warms, we turn down the pool heat.

  • Recycle boxes placed at key points on site are checked and emptied, with contents taken to recycle centers.

  • Soda cans, plastic bottles, and glass containers are recycled.

  • As possible, we encourage energy reduction such as promoting staff to turn off unused lighting, appliances, and computers.

  • We take routine energy audits to determine where we can make better use of what we have.

  • Encouraging dishwasher users to click on "air dry" rather than using the drying cycle. Air drying alone saves huge amounts of energy, and most people wait hours before unloading their dishes anyway.

  • Energy demand goes down at night. Consider washing dishes and clothes over night when the demand for electricity production is low anyway.

  • Consider washing clothes in cold water - depending on the clothing, cooler water can be better for some fabrics.

    Fun Facts

  • In 1963, baseball pitcher Gaylord Perry off-handedly remarked, "They'll put a man on the moon before I hit a home run." Then, on July 20, 1969, a few hours after Neil Armstrong set foot on the moon, Gaylord Perry hit his first (and only) home run.

  • February, 1865, is the only month in all of recorded history that did not have a full moon.

  • Need to quick-dry fingernail polish? Try using a cooking spray such as PAM. This stuff is also good for removing paint splotches and grease stains from your hands.

  • Need a hair conditioner and have none available? Try using a dessert topping such as COOL WHIP? Leave it on for 15 minutes, and be sure to rinse thoroughly.

  • When children bite their tongues (and it happens to children of all ages), try putting sugar on the sore part of the tongue. Perhaps the theory here is that if the sugar doesn't make the wound feel better the owner of the tongue enjoys the sweet taste anyway.

  • Polish your eyeglasses, biker and underwater goggles, with Colgate toothpaste, clearing off the residue to a shine. A fine coat of Colgate prevents fogging.

  • To remove baked-on food, fill a container with water and soak the pan with a Bounce softener towelette and soak overnight. The static from the Bounce towel will cause the baked on food to adhere to it. Two Efferdent tablets with an overnight soaking will do the same thing.

  • Before leaving for vacation, turn off the water heater and save money.

  • Today's economy has brought us challenges but also, on occasion, humor. In the spirit of helping to put things into perspective, here are several examples. You know that the economy is having a hard time when...
    • ...young children know that "economic credit crunch" is not a breakfast cereal.
    • ...news about the economy off-sets front-page stories about celebrity missteps.
    • ...baseball players are now taking pay cuts.
    • ...it is not uncommon to see a Rolls Royce Phantom Coupé lined up in the MacDonald's drive-through.
    • ...sewing, carpentry, and vegetable gardening, once hobbies and spare-time crafts, have become basic life skills again in 2009.
