ABBEY AROUND TOWN: Let's Visit the Myrtle Beach Pelicans
On a balmy Wednesday night in July, some friends and I made our way out to BB&T's Coastal Field to watch our Myrtle Beach Pelicans play ball. Think it's just some ol' baseball game? Not at all! I got so much more for my baseball dollars!
With between-inning events such as sumo wrestling and miniature bike racing, promotions that prompted spectators to yell such phrases as "roast beef" and "washer fluid," and entertainment from Pelican's mascot Splash and team dogs Dinger and Deuce, my family and I had a blast! We found that attending Pelican's baseball entertained the entire family!
In today's cost-conscious economy, tickets to the Pelicans top out at $9. You can't go wrong! Check out the web site at www.myrtlebeachpelicans.com.
All for now from Abbey! Look for me … around town.
Employee Spotlight on Louis Bland
Step into Louis Bland's office as Avista's Bell Captain at the ground floor and be impressed! Located through the glass doors near the garage, his domain is well grounded, and so is he. An avid golfer, he is especially fond of grounds and greens at the Strand courses. That's what makes him impressive, the fact that he wears many hats. He is dependable and consistent in each function, performing tasks above and beyond job expectations. Steadfast, Louis always does what needs to be done with efficiency and good cheer. Knowledgeable and reliable, he ensures that guests find what they need, get where they're going, and know what happens when at the Resort. He might even offer a golf tip if asked.
Louis, good job well done!

We are proud to announce that DJ Cecil Chandler is coming back to rock the Avista Pool Deck on Saturday, August 30 from noon to 4pm. Known far and wide here on the Strand, Cecil has been a broadcaster at one of Myrtle Beach's local television stations for over 30 years. In addition to reporting the news, he also hosts such segments as "Cecil's World" and "Cooking with Cecil Chandler." With his energetic personality and infectious smile, Cecil has become one of the Avista's favorite guest DJs -- not only do guests love him, but the staff does too. In fact, one staff member is always chasing him asking for one of his elusive "Cecil Chandler Bobble Head Dolls." Check this newsletter next month to learn if she finally does!

Wonderful place.... ...excellent price. I loved staying here and I would highly recommend it to all my friends!!
Phyllis Arndt
This is one of the cleanest and best located places we have stayed at North Myrtle Beach. I would highly recommend anyone traveling to this area to stay here.
Penny Ewing
The staff was very friendly and helpful when we arrived at the hotel. We felt that it was very thoughtful of the staff to call us when our room was ready on the first day, as we were traveling from far.
Eva Uclobina
My family had a great time at the resort. Our room was in a central location so we could access the fitness room, pools, and beach very easily. We are planning a trip back next year.
Mary Harris
Hope this is the place to say - The housekeeper deserves recognition and a huge THANK YOU for her honesty. We left a daytimer in our room, and it held our credit cards. I called the front desk 4 hours later, almost back home, and spoke with Rose. She checked with the housekeeper, who said she had the daytimer. They mailed it to us the next day, and everything was still in place. What honesty and helpfulness! I assure you I will pass the word on about the Avista Resort - not just a great place to stay - but honest, good people who work there Our 2nd stay, and we plan to be back many more times! Thanks so much and please commend Rose and the housekeeper of room 1203 during July 11 - 14.
Marty & Darlene Lowe
Thank you a million times. Missy & Doug's wedding was everything she and he wanted. She was the boss and planned everything. You are the other boss and did a great job. I know you worked hard like Missy & Doug did. Please also let Chip (bartender guy) and the chef know they did a great job also. The food could not have been any better. A++ to everything and everybody. We appreciate all of it….so thanks again.

Myrtle Beach on a Budget!
Guess what, you can save money while on vacation! Myrtle Beach is a fabulous place to visit on a limited budget because we have such a wide variety of things to do.
- Let's start with our main attraction: the beach! Whether you enjoy fishing, swimming, shell-hunting, or walking at twilight, our coastline has something for everyone, young to less young.
- Looking for family fun in a well-lighted place? Check out Broadway at the Beach where something is going on all over the boardwalk, whether it's feeding the huge koi in the pond or watching a "street" actor perform! All that and more just by walking around.
- Want to see live entertainment? We have several show specials connected with Alabama Theatre, including kids free (3-16 years old) on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday, through Labor Day.
- Mini-golf has unlimited play during the day around much of the Grand Strand. Kids who play during the day when most courses offer unlimited course time save oodles of money.
So, call one of our helpful guest services representatives to book your late summer vacation at Avista. You can save money and have lots of fun, too. The Front Desk and the Concierge Desk can help you find the right amenities for you and your group!
