Here we are in June, where the summertime events overflow freely on the calendar. With more than 12 hours of daylight each day to delight our guests, the decision of which activities should fill a beach vacation can be great fun to make. So how is YOUR summer going so far, and how far away are you from the beach?
De-stressing here can be defined as lying on the soft sandy beach under the vivid blue Carolina sky with warm moist breezes drifting across bronzing shoulders. The inviting waves bring out people's adventures with surf and boogie boards, and for those guests who look for even more to do, Avista's summertime activities center is now open. Its highly talented Activities Team has set up a tent by the pool, open from 9:30 until 4:00 pm every Tuesday through Saturday. It features action-packed sports, arts and crafts, and fitness sessions. To sign up, guests should inquire at the front desk.
Further down the boulevard near Main Street, a new addition to the beach has opened to the public. Called "The Hippo," this attraction is said to be the world's largest inflatable water slide rising 36 feet tall (climb to the top using 60 stairs with hand rails and non-slip grooves). Located between 1st and 2nd Avenues South, the ride opened June 4th to beach-goers at $3 per ride ($20 for an all-day pass). Tickets and wristbands are available for purchase at Ocean Park, 2nd Avenue South street end.
Several weeks ago, the Freestyle Music Park opened at Highway 501 in Myrtle Beach. Its location in lower Myrtle Beach near Highway 501 might sounds daunting until you learn that the drive takes less than an hour down Highway 31. This family-friendly theme park (site of the former Hard Rock Park) features live shows, thrilling rides, and much more.
With so much to see and do here in North Myrtle Beach, you can keep up with our action and news through Twitter and Facebook. Log on and search for Avista Resort; we'll keep you up to date so that you can join us here at the beach this year!
Your Friends at Avista Resort!

JUST OFF MAIN Featured in The Sun News, June 9, 2009.
Recently, the Grand Strand's local newspaper, The Sun News, featured our wonderful new Executive Chef, Marvin Jones, in a discussion of warm-weather menu items. Here is a portion of the article:
|
In the summertime, people want to eat lighter," said Marvin Jones, executive chef at Just Off Main at the Avista Resort in North Myrtle Beach. "They are also trying to watch their diets and find lighter meals more appealing. "Cajun shrimp penne pasta, Italian chicory salad with roasted corn vinaigrette, and salmon en croute with a roasted red pepper cream sauce are among the summer meals Jones has on his menu. Seasonal vegetables, seafood, chicken, salads and cold soups dominate menus that have shed the weight of winter...
|
Chef Marvin, shown here with some of his team (left to right) JC, Bunny, and Lee, ensures that diners delight in their meals! His enticing seafood and other meat dishes are among his menu plans for eating well and sensibly. A native of Charleston S.C., he has worked with many master chefs through the years. His latest experience in historical restaurants of Charleston has added to his vast repertoire of guest-pleasing menu options.
Since moving to Myrtle Beach S.C. eight years ago, Chef Marvin has managed top-level restaurants and received many awards, such as the Chaine Des Rotisseurs for outstanding service in catering and the People's Choice Awarded for Best Entrée at the Taste of the Town.
Either on your next vacation here at Avista or any time you enjoy dining at our Just Off Main restaurant, enjoy some of his signature dishes, subject to availability, such as Spanish paella, curried shrimp and coconut rice, Beef Wellington, and Chicken Cacciatore.

Jim Eggen, General Manager and Angler
Whenever Jim Eggen, Avista's General Manager, finds a spare moment to relax from the responsibilities of his job at the resort, he seeks out the most remote stretch of back-water in the Grand Strand to drop his fishing line in search of peace, quiet, and (if available) fish.
To relax thoroughly, everyone needs to calm the body as well as the mind, and Jim's relaxation method of choice is fishing because of its settling effects. Beautiful landscapes, soothing music from nearby birds, and the thrill of fishing in his "reel" life help make him more efficient in handling the many and varied issues that occur back in his "real" life.
Here's an idea for you. Try Jim's recipe for rebuilding your own core energies. Why not come on down to the beach, check into Avista Resort, and go fishing, either here at oceanfront on the surf, a few blocks northward at The Cherry Grove Pier, or far into the back-water, as Jim does, where many Grand Strand fishing sites abound? There's nothing like a beach get-away to restore your energies! Just ask Jim!

Around Town This Month
Avista Resort enjoyed many guests over the past month, and some of those guests stayed here to enjoy our amenities and activities, as well as to participate in the action around the Grand Strand:
- Military Appreciation Days. The very first Myrtle Beach Military Appreciation Days Festival included active duty personnel and veterans in a golf match, a basketball tournament, a marksmanship competition, a 5K run/walk, a model airplane demonstration, a combat cook-off, a concert/picnic, and much more all across the Grand Strand. Lasting from May 28-30, the celebration hosted more than 20 military groups and their families from North and South Carolina and Georgia.
- Bikers in North Myrtle Beach. While sunny weather and trouble-free vacation options made our area a great spot for bikers this past May, the crowds were noticeably smaller than they have been in previous years. The City of North Myrtle Beach conducted business as usual, and so did Avista Resort where a number of bikers, as well as guests with a variety of interests, stayed and enjoyed their vacations.
- May 30th Avista's Tree Top Lounge presented Gary Jules in song. This was a surprise booking that resulted in a highly successful turn-out, so come hang out regularly at Tree Top to stay on top of events! This one was great! With a pre-show by Joel Rush, a Charleston singer/songwriter, the evening was fully packed with talent and enjoyment. Watch our web site under "news" for future happenings such as this or check the local web site www.NorthMyrtleBeachOnline.com under "Things To Do."
- Warmer weather and June. As schools are ending their sessions, many families are taking advantage of discounts to bring their children to the beach. As we have done in past years, Avista is again featuring organized children's activities. This year our two wonderfully fun instructors are Diana and Oscar, and they bring with them a wide array of interesting amusements for ages 5 and older. The list includes pool games, shark tooth searches, games such as "Steal the Bacon" and "World Trivia," hair wraps, seaside darts and much more. Subject to weather-related changes, these activities are available Tuesday through Saturday by signing up at the front desk here at Avista. Some activities include a nominal fee (cash only) to cover the cost of materials only (see the Activities Schedule for those with fees).
- Surprises. You just never know when a treat will happen along. Today, for example, the chef of Just Off Main brought out a plate of freshly baked, warm brownies to the front desk for any passer-by or arriving guest to enjoy. What a treat! This is just one of life's pleasures here at Avista, where guests are treated like family!
So check online or give us a call and make arrangements for your summer break away from the mundane to the extraordinary, amazing world of Avista Resort, right here at the beach.

Avista Loves Summer!
This summer, Avista Resort uses the talents of our two fabulous activities coordinators, Diana and Oscar shown here, when you want to line up interesting and fun things to do for guests ages 5 and older. The Activities Table is open now on the lawn near the pool, 9:30 am to 4:00 pm on Tuesdays through Saturday. Walk past the pool toward the beach on the south side and look for their tent. Guests who would like to register to participate in any of the activities should come to this designated table or ask at the front desk.
When you arrive, be sure to take a copy of the activities' schedule* at Avista's front desk. This flyer lists everything from water aerobics and fitness fun to pool games, arts and crafts, and hair wraps. Do you love bingo? Come to the pool every Wednesday at 1:30 pm for poolside bingo at $1 per card! Kids will enjoy playing water-balloon dodge ball every Tuesday at 4:00 pm. Young artists will delight in making "shirts to dye for" These activities are just a few that we offer, and you might find some surprises in the collection, too!
|
*Note: Inclement weather or other unforeseen circumstances can alter the schedule, so it is advisable to ask daily for updates. Some activities have nominal fees for materials, shown on the activities list. Materials such as tempera paint might stain clothing, and parents are advised that their children should wear appropriate clothing for the arts and crafts activities. Neither the activities team nor Avista Resort is responsible for minding children before or after a scheduled even or for clothing damaged during these activities
|
This year's activities team broadens your beach experience and awareness with fun and interesting things to do and learn. When you visit Avista this summer, try out some of the activities where you can meet people, share ideas, and have fun. Ever-GREEN at Avista!
You'll find Avista Resort growing more environmentally friendly with its on-going efforts to recycle, and reprocess, and recover. In the past, we have mentioned our recycling bins for reclaiming things like aluminum cans and plastics. Here are some recent efforts:
- Changing from large, open-pour containers of coffee cream and sugar to individually wrapped (and therefore more conservative) products, reducing waste and spillage possibilities;
- Turning off lights in unused areas such as storage closets, pantries, and other places;
- Recycling junk mail to the paper recycle bin;
- Passing on replaced items such as furniture and uniforms to appropriate recycle centers;
- Collecting used batteries and other similar worn-out products that are considered hazardous to appropriate recycle center;
- Planting and maintaining live plants that help to keep the Avista's landscape clean and fresh.
- Encouraging swimmers to soap up and rinse off in a shower before going swimming in the resorts' pools, hot tubs, and lazy rivers. This reduces significant amounts of dirt, bacteria, and other pollutants such as deodorant and perfumes. The fewer pollutants, the cleaner the water.
If we as concerned consumers everywhere take a stand and work together, even big changes on planet earth can take place. With each passing month, we at Avista Resort in North Myrtle Beach continue our "green" efforts and strive to be among the area's business leaders in this endeavor.

Featured Recipe - Balsamic Grilled Vegetables
Many people are cooking out, saving indoor energy and having fun at the same time. Here is an easy dish that helps you complete all of your meal at the same time, ready when your back-yard guests are ready to eat.
This grilled vegetable dish goes well with burgers, chicken, or hot dogs. Make the vegetable mixture earlier, allowing it to marinate in the refrigerator. Then hand it to the grill-chef when he is about 15 minutes away from serving.
INGREDIENTS:
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 tablespoon dried (or 1/4 cup chopped) fresh basil
- 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar
- 2 teaspoons kosher (or 1 1/2 tsp. table) salt
- 1 teaspoon pepper
- 1 fennel bulb
- 1 large red onion (cut into 1-inch pieces)
- 1 (8-oz.) package fresh mushrooms
- 1 pt. cherry tomatoes
- 2 medium zucchini (cut into 1-inch pieces)
- 4 small yellow squash (cut into 1-inch pieces)
Preparation:
- If making the vegetables ahead of the grill food, stir together olive oil and next 4 ingredients in a small bowl.
- Rinse fennel thoroughly. Trim and discard root end of fennel bulb. Trim stalks from bulb, reserving fronds for another use. Cut bulb in half vertically, and remove core. Cut bulb into 1/2-inch-thick slices.
- Toss fennel, onion, and mushrooms with half of olive oil mixture. Place that combination in a grill wok or metal basket.
- At grill-side, make sure that the grill is preheated to 350° to 400° (medium-high) heat. Placed the grill wok or basket filled with vegetables on the grill. Cover it with a grill lid. Cook the vegetables for 10 minutes over 350° to 400° (medium-high grill heat) heat.
- Toss tomatoes, zucchini, and yellow squash with remaining olive oil mixture. Add to grill wok or basket. Grill, covered with grill lid, stirring occasionally, 10 to 15 minutes or until vegetables are tender. Serve immediately.

GUEST COMMENTS
|

Guests' comments help us grow better and better, and we love hearing what we did right and what needs improvement. Here are a few of the comments we received recently from guests either staying here with us or planning a visit:
I travel from Omaha, NE, for the activities at Mayfest. This is the second year I have attended and stayed at The Avista. I could go on and on about the Staff at The Avista. The nice lady that checked me in this year was the same as last and remembered me by Name! Out of all the customers in and out of the resort in a years' time, how many places can a person go to get that treatment? I always reserve the 3-bedroom corner DLX room, although by myself, both times, the room has been spotless and no complaints from me. The employees at Just off Main were just as pleasant and also called me by name. Also, the food was cooked to perfection, and service was best in all my travels. Note to All Employees: Keep up the wonderful work! Closing note to People wishing to stay in North Myrtle Beach. Don't bother looking around--save your time and money -- stay at the Avista! They Are the BEST! Will be back in 2010, and besides the super job done by the planners for "Mayfest," the Avista alone would bring me back. Absolutely Love It!!!
Email from newsletter response from J Randolph, Nebraska. 05.26.09
Last year, we stayed at the Avista for nine days the latter part of October. We are booked there again this year for the last two weeks. We love the location and the feeling that the establishment actually appreciated our business. I can't really say that there was anything that we didn't like. I have your WEB cam on my favorites list and look at it very often. See you in October.
Email from newsletter response from the Miller family. 05.26.09
We stayed at the Avista....loved the rooms...loved the friendly atmosphere and restaurant!!!
Email from newsletter response from the Martin family, 05.26.09
I act as a group leader for our annual trip to Myrtle Beach for a group ranging in size from 22-32. Each year I review the different accommodations and golf packages available in order to not only get the best deal, but the best resort for the price. For several years, I had considered Avista Resort but did not change. This year when [my previous vacation spot did not meet my needs] I contacted the Avista Resort and found everyone I either talked to or e-mailed to be very courteous and professional. From check in to check out, everything went as smoothly as could be. The staff was very friendly and helpful when we had questions. In reference to the accommodations, all of us liked the layout of the 3 BR condos. There was ample room to move around and enjoy the company of visitors. The resort was in a location that made it very easy to get to many restaurants and golf courses. We probably saved at least an hour's worth of driving time each day. We were there March 5-9, so we did not take advantage of the beach. I did notice though there were many visitors that seemed to have a good time using the pool facilities and beach….Thanks for a great time. I hope I can work things out for next year's trip which will be our 19th annual trip.
Email from newsletter response from S. Turner, Roanoke, VA. 05.26.09.

Fun Facts
A wave is one of a series of ridges that wind pushes across the surface of a liquid. Wind is the chief source of all of our waves, but not the only source of wave-energy. Surfers know that the better waves are not caused from strong winds. Strong local off-shore winds create messy, close together, and uneven wave - miserable for surfers.
Waves lose energy when they interact with the ocean floor. A gently sloping shoreline produces less wave energy than does a steeper slope.
As waves enter the shallow shoreline, they slow down, lose energy, lose power, and decrease wave size. For example, think of the difference between a wave along the long shallow British shoreline compared with a wave coming straight from deep ocean waters to the narrow Hawaiian shoreline.
Bathymetry is the term for the shape of the sea bed.
Water in the waves does not move much at all. Watch how a seagull or pelican floating on the water bobs up-and-down in a somewhat circular fashion, and it always returns to its original position. Rather than the water moving, the wave energy is moving.
Wind-generated ocean waves are surface waves. Some travel thousands of miles before reaching land. There are three kinds: ripples, seas, and swells.
Ripples appear on smooth water when the wind blows, but will die quickly if the wind stops.
Seas are larger-scale waves, often irregular motions that form under sustained winds such as in a storm. They tend to last much longer, even after the wind has died. Gravity encourages them even further.
As seas build away from where they began, they naturally separate in differing directions, depending on their size and direction. Swells are the wave motions that form from this. Even on the calmest days, storms elsewhere on the ocean can create rolling waves that move away from the storm. They can increase as storms intensify.
The Atlantic Ocean has fewer swells than does the Pacific Ocean. Central America in 1513 the Spanish explorer Vasco Nunez de Balboa first saw the Pacific ocean in such a calm condition that he named it "Pacific." Had he arrived during a storm, the ocean might have a different name.
Tsunamis are waves generated by geological effects, such as a volcano erupting under the ocean. More common in the Pacific Ocean, they are rare but not impossible in the Atlantic Ocean. In deep water, they are not visible because they are small in height and long in wave-length.
